ISLAMABAD - The critics has dubbed several youth-oriented schemes of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as a political move to lure young voters but after coming to power, the government is fulfilling the promise it had made.
Among several schemes was the provision of laptop to talented students pursing a degree programme from one of the Higher Education Commission [HEC] recognised universities and the government has decided to expand the scheme, it has been learnt.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered for provision of laptops to disabled students without merit across the country under Prime Minster Laptop Scheme 2014. This is not the end, the scheme has been extended to Azad Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, The Nation has learnt.
The prime minister announced the laptops for 100,000 brilliant students during the visit of Gorden Brown, United Nations special envoy for global education, to Pakistan.
Well-placed sources in the PM Secretariat informed this scribe that during a meeting regarding laptop scheme, the PM had instructed the relevant authorities to provide laptops to disabled students from all across the country without any merit and discrimination. The PM ordered to extend the laptop scheme to GB and AJK and facilitate the students of both regions on merit. The PM ordered that it would be ensured that the laptops were given to the deserving students on merit without interference of political leaders and influential persons.
The free laptops will be provided to male and female students of HEC approved education institutes and 50 per cent undergraduate students will also get the laptops. The HEC has set criteria and issued a circular to all universities and selection process of students will be managed by universities administration.
According to an HEC official, the HEC presented the tender for getting the 100,000 laptops under the PM scheme. He said different international companies participated in the bid but China based international company Haier won the bid trough following procedure. He told a ceremony will be held in HEC on Monday (tomorrow) and officials of HEC and Haier will sign the memorandum of understanding in this regard.
