CJ asks lawyers to address people's grievances

ISLAMABAD - The whole nation acknowledges the sacrifices and commitment shown by legal fraternity to bring a true and effective change in the society for sake of democracy, supremacy of Constitution and rule of law, said Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry here on Thursday. Addressing the outgoing office-bearers of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) headed by Ali Ahmed Kurd and newly-elected SCBA members headed by Qazi Muhammad Anwar at a farewell function, the CJ said that lawyers with the support of masses had made a new example for the world through their struggle for restoration of judiciary in the country. A peaceful change is only possible by putting efforts together for a noble cause and towards responsibilities vested on us under the Constitution, the CJ said. He said the public had great expectations from the bar and the bench, as their role in redressal of peoples grievances was very essential. He asked the SCBA leaders to put all their energies together to address peoples grievances and plead their cases in a professional manner. The CJ said that Supreme Court was fully active in addressing important maters of public interest aimed at providing relief to the people. To achieve the objective of clearing the backlog and expediting trial proceedings, the Honourable Judges have been working hard, often extending the court working hours so as to decide maximum number of cases, he added. The SCBA leaders praised Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for his untiring efforts to ensure rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution. They also offered their unconditional support in maintaining the independence of judiciary. The delegation members also lauded the efforts of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry for improvement in judiciary and cleansing judiciary of corrupt elements.
