Street crimes on the rise

RAWALPINDI (Online)- In the first three months of 2009, as much as 827 incidents of dacoity occurred while 588 vehicles and 97 motorcycles were stolen in the District Rawalpindi showing alarming rise of criminal incidents. According to sources, the areas of New Town Airport, Westridge, Sadiq Abad, Cantt and Civil Line witnessed increasing number of criminal incidents and jewelries, prize bonds, saving certificates, foreign currency and cash worth of Rs 40 million were stolen. Sources told that due to shuffling of police officials on political basis, the performance of police regarding arrest of criminals was not satisfactorily. In the first three months of current year, nearly 588 vehicles and 97 motorcycles were stolen but Police Car Lifting Cell failed to nab any main gang involved in incidents of stealing vehicles. Meanwhile, on the directions of the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Mobile Centres have been set-up aimed at providing sugar on affordable prices to people of the city. A spokesperson of Utility Stores Corporation District Rawalpindi told that besides these Mobile Centers, sugar is also available at other stores and MD Utility Stores has given strict directions in this regard. He further said that steps are being taken to ensure the implementation of policy announced by the government aimed to give relief to people. Meanwhile, the work on the project 'extension of Sadiq Abad Chowk is yet to start despite passage of three years of its approval and the residents have demanded of the government to start the work on the project with no further delay. The project of extending the Sadiq Abad Chowk and installation of traffic signals was inaugurated three years ago but work on it could not be started yet and traffic jam has become a routine matter at the point. Residents including Sana Ullah, Akhtar, Nisa Chaudhry, Arif Saeed But, Mehmood Akhtar Malik, Zafar Iqbal, Shafqat Rama and Dr Niaz while talking to this agency here on Monday said that large encroachments on the roadsides also caused traffic problems. They demanded of the RDA and TMA officials to complete the project without any further delay.
