ISLAMABAD - A crackdown on unfit vehicles is on the cards in the federal capital, said National Highways and Motorways Inspector General Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema.
He was chairing operational meeting which was attended by zonal commanders including DIG A.D Khawaja, DIG Wajid Zia, DIG Wisal Fakhar Sultan, DIG Helena Iqbal Saeed, DIG Ehsan Sadiq, DIG Zubair Hashmi and other officials.
Important operational matters related to zones were discussed in detail during the meeting. The Inspector General said that passenger overloading in PSVs would not be tolerated in any case and those who carry passengers on the rooftop of the vehicles would be dealt strictly. The Inspector General directed all the officers that safety of commuters must be ensured during the holy month of Ramadan as well as on the Eid occasion. Accident analysis of last 06 months revealed that drowsiness, brake failure and tyre bursting were the cause of many serious accidents on highways and motorways.
The inspector general directed all zonal commanders to initiate all-out efforts to control such accidents and launch special briefing campaigns to sensitize road users in this respect. Inspector General directed the Commandant NH&MP Training College to ensure training quality at par with international standards.
On this occasion DIG Motorways briefed that on the directions of Inspector General NH&MP, strict action, against habitual offenders of traffic laws was initiated. In the same vein, NH&MP has banned entry of another 50 vehicles including 07 buses, 12 wagons, 04 coasters and 27 trucks/trailers on the motorways for the period of 15 days.
These vehicles either violated speed limit or lane discipline more than 05 times. At the end of the meeting, Inspector General thanked the HEC for their cooperation.
