2 former SCBA chiefs back CRCP's views

ISLAMABAD - Two former presidents of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) confirmed on Wednesday that lawyers community was divided over the issue of recommendations of Constitutional Reforms Committee of the Parliament (CRCP) regarding judges appointment in superior judiciary. However, they themselves backed up the recommendations of the Committee, headed by PPP leader Raza Rabbani, on judges appointment with consensus of the nominated legislatures. The role of the Parliament should not be limited only to judges appointment but it should include appointments in other departments too like Army, Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and Ali Ahmad Kurd explained while talking to reporters here at the Press Room of the Supreme Court. Although both the leaders parrying the queries asked by the reporters, yet they spoke frankly on what is going on in the country, especially with regard to judiciary and the Executive. They also spoke freely about Swiss cases and the role of Pakistani High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hassan, as he was reportedly visiting to Geneva and trying to write off the evidence. They were of the view that it was impossible to restore the original Constitution of 1973 due to some legal restrain. Aitzaz said it was difficult to eliminate the chances of Army coup through courts judgments but July 31st judgement would block the way of Martial Law in future. He termed the judgement a landmark in the history of Pakistan but the Government was unable to understand the worth of that judgement. Talking about the Judicial Commission, he said that old method regarding appointments of judges should be reformed.
