LAHORE - PPP Central Secretary Information Fauzia Wahab said on Wednesday that no proposal for granting extension in service to present army chief was under consideration at the moment. At a press conference held at Lahore Press Club here, she was asked about reasons behind grant of extension in service to present DG 1SI Lt Gen Ahmad Shuja Pasha and whether the government intended to do the same in case of General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. She was accompanied by PPP Punjab Secretary Information Dr Fakhruddin Chaudhry. About General Pasha, she said he had been granted one year extension in service in order to benefit from his expertise, whereas no such proposal in case of General Kayani was under consideration at the moment. She, however, revealed a bit of governments intention about present army chief when she said that it was a fact that whenever in the past extension in service was granted to any of the army chiefs, it never went in the interest of democracy and the country. This has the implied meaning that government is reluctant to extend the tenure of present army chief ending in October this year. Responding to a question about reservations of lawyers community about formation of judicial commission and the parliamentary committee with powers to appoint judges in the superior judiciary, she said the Parliament was a sovereign institution and all other institutions were supposed to work under it. Whatever decision the Parliament takes on judges appointment, the government would implement the same, she further remarked. To a question about Kalabagh Dam, she said PPP would have no objection to its construction if Punjab chief minister could convince his counterparts in rest of the provinces. But we as a party dont want to make cracks in the federation by taking a unilateral decision on the issue, Fauzia observed. When asked about the presence of member of a banned religious outfit in an election rally at Bahawalnagar along with Punjab Governor, she said governor had been told that he belonged to Jamat-e-Ahle Sunnat, and if he turned out be a member of some banned organisation it was not his (governors) fault. She said PPP had never been in contact with any banned religious outfit and if that person belonged to such an organisation the party disowned him. About the ongoing clash between Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer and Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif, the PPP leader said such things keep happening in a democratic set up and hence there was nothing unusual with that. She insisted that allegations of the governor against Punjab law minister were based on facts. When asked about enhancing wages of the labourers in the context of substantial raise in salaries of the judges, she said the PPP government had always worked for the well-being of downtrodden people and the govt had the credit to regularise the services of contractual employees serving in low grades. She said there was no comparison between the salaries of judges and those of the low grade employees and the labourers. Fauzia also chaired a meeting of partys district information secretaries in the City prior to holding the news conference. Briefing newsmen about the said meeting, she said she got to know from information secretaries that partys district cadres were in favour of keeping the present system of local governments intact. They also want direct election of district and tehsil nazims like that of the UC nazim, she added. She said all district information secretaries of PPP have got blackberry devices from party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to improve their communication with partys top leadership.
