'All out efforts to save children from sexual abuse'

RAWALPINDI - The City District Nazim Rawalpindi, Raja Javed Ikhlas has assured that district government would take every measure in collaboration with civil society and NGOs to save children from sexual abuse and exploitation, as it is the obligation of government to resolve social issues on priority basis. He expressed these views while addressing a consultation session on the role of media as an advocate on child protection issues, which was organised by Working Group on Monday. Raja Javed Ikhlas asked the Working Group to submit suggestions to curb the child sexual abuse. He said that proper law-making should take place in order to protect children. He termed the poverty, unemployment along with law and order situation as the main causes of child sexual abuse. He said that it was the duty of the parents to keep close eye on the activities as well as companionship of their children. District Nazim appreciated the role of media's role to spread awareness among the masses about the menace. On the occasion, Syed Mehmood Asghar and Munizay Bano of the Working Group described that the group was formed with the coalition of six NGOs in 2003 to abolish child sexual abuse from the society. They said that in 2008 some, some 709 males and 1612 females under 18 were victimised sexually across the country. Asghar revealed that the Group has formulated National Plan of Action (NPA) after consultation with government functionaries and people from different walks of life to prevent child sexual abuse and commercial sexual exploitation of children, which was approved by the Federal Cabinet but the legislation in this regard is due yet. "According to a study, at video games centres, bus stands, auto workshops, shrines, seminaries, internet cafes and snooker clubs were the main points of child sexual abuse either incidentally or commercially. Most of the working children have been victimized," he added. He said that government of Pakistan has signed Convention for rights of child in 1990, Stockholm Agenda for Action and Declaration in 1996 and Yokohama Commitment in 2001. The working group has formulated          They asked the media to adopt a code of ethics while reporting the incidents of rape and child sexual abuse and the identification of the victims must be protected. He asked the media to assist the working group to realize the government its responsibilities.
