ISLAMABAD - The National Health Policy to be announced by the end of March or in early April, would suggest proper punishment for the traders of human organs. Federal Minister for Health Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani said this while speaking on a call attention notice in the National Assembly on Friday. The minister said that kidney bazaar had been shut down after the promulgation of 2007 Ordinance and "now things are under control." Jakhrani further said that in the past, there were websites regarding the sale of kidneys in the country and people from all over the world were coming here to buy kidneys at cheap prices. It was pointed out that sale of kidneys and other organs of human body were on the rise in the labour community and kidneys were being sold only for 10,000 to 25,000 rupees. The Minister observed, "Human Organs Transplant Authority (HOTA) is now responsible for streamlining and monitoring the donation of human organs and any illegality in this regard should be reported to the Authority". Earlier, during the question hour, the House was informed by the Parliamentary Secretary for Health Mehreen Bhutto that 458 pharmaceutical companies were working in the country and various steps had been taken to encourage the pharmaceutical industry. "The govt has forwarded a proposal to the Finance ministry to increase the number of drug inspectors to ensure the quality of drugs," she added. To another question, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Quaid-e-Azam Students Hostel located at No 5, Barkston Gardens, London had been rented to the officers of Pakistan High Commission in London. The Education Ministry justified in a written reply that the building was abandoned by it (the ministry) as the building had fallen into derelict condition. The situation deteriorated to an extent that the local council threatened to seize the building on health and safety grounds. The then High Commissioner of Pakistan took the initiative to raise the case with the then Chief Executive Officer for giving the control of building to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for utilisation as officers' apartment. It said the building has been reconstructed keeping in view the needs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by spending 1 million pounds so it is not suitable to be used as a student hostel. Giving details about the Pakistanis imprisoned in different countries, the Ministry informed the House that 16 Pakistanis were held in Polish detention centres on charges of illegal immigration whereas 21 Pakistanis held in Austrian detention centres on the same charges. About 53 Pakistanis had also been detained in different prisons and detention centres of Thailand under the charges of fake documents, drug trafficking and illegal stay. Minister for Pakistan Railways Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour told the National Assembly that Pakistan Railways suffered loss of Rs 12669.562 million during 2007-08. There are 559 Railway Stations in the country at Present.
