ISLAMABAD - President Asif Ali Zardari has said that the democracy has taken roots in the country.
The completion of Senate elections in a challenging time and the emergence of coalition partners with overwhelming majority in the Upper House are positive steps towards institutional stability and strengthening democracy, the president said during his interaction with senators from PPP and its allied parties at a dinner hosted for them at the Aiwan-e-Sadr Tuesday.
Senate Chairman, Syed Nayyar Hussain Bokhari, Deputy Chairman Sabir Baloch, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Mir Israrullah Zehri were also present.
The president felicitated the newly-elected senators and hoped that they would prove instrumental in further underpinning democracy and the Parliament.
He praised the outgoing senators for their role in restoration of Constitution and other far-reaching legislative measures, including the landmark 18th, 19th and 20th amendments.
He expressed hope that the newly-elected senators would take the legacy of outgoing senators high and work for strengthening parliamentary democracy.
The senators thanked the president for the meeting and assured that they would work for promoting parliamentary practices and strengthening democratic values and Parliament in the country.
