Govt-Taliban secret peace talks underway

ISLAMABAD - As a result of secret talks with the Taliban operating in Pakistan's tribal areas, the Government is most likely to secure a new deal with the militants for durable peace in Waziristan and other troubled regions in the next few days. Besides, the elaborate efforts of new Pakistani Government for peace in the tribal areas, the intense desire of top Taliban leadership to utilize fully its human resources and ammunition against the US troops in Afghanistan instead of Pakistan's security forces, also helped pave the way for new peace deal in Waziristan. According to officials here, the Taliban have earlier put a break on their suicide attacks in different parts of Pakistan to allow the political parties in the coalition government to review the policy vis-a-vis war on terror and opt for dialogue instead of force. A source told The Nation that the Taliban leadership based in Afghanistan was not in favour of engagement with Pakistan Army and security forces in the battlefields. Rather, he said, Taliban leaders wanted their resources to be used up to the optimum level against the US led coalition forces and that had been communicated to the Waziristan based militant commander Baitullah Mehsud and others, time and again. "Taliban want to inflict huge losses to the foreign troops operating in Afghanistan in the ongoing spring offensive and they want their cadres to focus on Afghanistan more than Pakistan," the source said. Another source revealed that the new peace deal was on cards as the talks with the militants had been held successfully. Even the Americans were partially supporting the peace endeavours of new Pakistani Government but they also wanted the use of force when and where it was necessary, he added. Nonetheless, the sources said that the renewed fighting in Khyber Agency between the security forces backed by the local tribesmen with a pro-Taliban militant organization, Lashkar-i-Islam, could have negative impact on the efforts aimed at securing new peace agreement in the tribal regions. The sources said that the security forces' operation against the Lashkar-i-Islam could enrage the Taliban and in order to ensure that the peace talks remain on track, the Government would have to show maximum possible restraint at this critical juncture.
