Colleges staff stages protest demos

ISLAMABAD – Teaching and non-teaching staff of both boys and girls colleges of Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) protested Friday against the proposed privatisation of the educational institutions run by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis across the country.Nearly 300 employees of the colleges gathered in front of the OPF Girls College, F-8, and demanded of the ministry to withdraw the advertisement appeared in a section of press on Thursday demanding partnership from private companies to run the educational institutes. The protesting staff said on the one hand the ministry has been regularising the college staff as per court directives and hiring new staff on regular basis and on the other it has decided to privatise the educational institutions.“We have not been informed anything yet about the future policy of the ministry regarding colleges. The regularisation process of the employees was in progress but the appearance of the advertisement has worried them. We don’t know what will be our future if the shares of institutions are privatised. Obviously the partner companies will prefer to hire their own staff and the old employees would be fired,” feared a teacher of OPF Boys College H-8. The protesters said they have formed an action committee and will continue their protest till the ministry withdraws the advertisement and if it continues with its policy the employees will move the courts against the decision. They maintained that they do not want to disrupt the educational activities in the institution so they will be protesting after working hours after performing their duties.
