Pims employees stage protest, token strike

ISLAMABAD - The employees of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) including doctors again resorted to protest and token strike Wednesday against the expected appointment of Dr Riaz Warraich from Mayo Hospital, Lahore, as Executive Director PIMS.
The outpatient department services were withdrawn from 11:00am to 01:00pm by the doctors and non-doctors and they gathered at administration block and raised slogans against the decision of the government.
It is important to be mentioned that the employees had protested and observed strike on September 10 as well against the expected appointment of Dr Warraich but they ended it the next day when the government delayed its decision for the time being.
According to information the Minister of Capital Administration and Development Nazar Gondal met with the Prime Minister to notify Dr Warraich’s appointment and it is expected that the PM office may issue the notification at any time.
The protesters warned that they will not allow anybody from outside the hospital to be appointed as ED and will continue their protest and token strike until the government takes back its decision of appointing the official form outside the hospital strength as ED. And if the government notifies Dr Warraich’s appointment the token strike will be converted into complete shutdown. President Young Doctors Association, Islamabad, Dr Asfandyar Khan said the government is compelling them for agitation and complete withdrawal of services from outpatient department, operation theater, and indoors
President of Joint Action Committee Manzar Abbas Naqvi was of the view that if the government wants to appoint new ED, it can appoint any senior official from the hospital strength or the post can be advertised and anyone who meets the criterion can be appointed on merit but the government is bent upon to appoint a blue-eyed official from Lahore just to grab money from mega projects of PIMS.
About 4500 patients from allover the country and adjacent areas visit the hospital daily for healthcare facilities who will badly suffer if the employees go on complete strike.
