Capital to have two more libraries

ISLAMABAD (APP)- National Library of Pakistan (NLP) has finalized arrangements to open two new community libraries in sectors I -10 and G-11 to provide reading more facilities to the residents of the capital. Official sources told APP here Wednesday that all the required reading materials had been arranged and soon these libraries would be made operational. However, they said that there was a problem of un-availability of power supply. Payment has been made to Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) for installing of transformer, they added. The sources said that NPL was already running four community libraries in various sectors including G-7, G-8, I-8 and F-11 and two new ones would help promote reading culture in the capital. They said the project was being implemented with the collaboration of Capital Development Authority (CDA) that provide reading halls at proposed sectors and NLP would provide staff and reading materials. Moreover, NLP has digitized over 300 rare books and manuscripts so far with a view to preserving the national literary heritage for the next generations. The sources said the step would not only help preserve national heritage but also facilitate researchers and scholars. The sources said initially Rs 4 million were earmarked for the project. Earlier scanners had to be used for preservation of books but now state-of-the-art technology like Book Eye and Zcutschel were used for this purpose. This technology was also being used in the developed countries and NLP has already imported, it, they added. They said CDs of these books were also being prepared and within the premise of NLP online access was available to the researcher and scholars. In second phase, not only newspapers and books in the NLP but also rare books and manuscripts across the county would be digitized in order to preserve national heritage for future generations, they said. He said online access to these books and manuscripts would be provided to the researchers and scholars both at national and international level. However, he said special passwords would be given to them for an access to these materials. The sources said plan was also afoot to digitize all those rare books and manuscripts which were available with Madressah, museums or even with individuals.
