RAWALPINDI  - The residents of Rawalpindi are concerned with the prevailing insecurity due to street crimes and other criminal incidents in various parts of the city.
The increasing incidents of street crimes, car lifting and mobile and purse snatching are the major concern for Pindiites and they demand the high authorities to take notice of the situation.
Talking to APP on Sunday, the residents complained that the muggers were roaming freely in the city and looting the people while the policemen were unable to check them.
The residents said the city goes dark due to loadshedding in evening and during that time young boys are out on roads and streets on bikes without number plates snatching cell phones and cash from the people. The police do not take the absence of number plates on the bikes, they added.
Saqib Nawaz, a resident of 7th Road area said that he registered a complaint of robbery at his house but the police were playing the role of silent spectators and taking no action. Mostly the street crime is increasing in the jurisdiction of New Town, Banni and Sadiqabad police stations as the residents of these areas complain of becoming victims of these incidents.
Working women, mostly become easy targets of purse and mobile snatchers or obsnoxious remarks when they come back home from work in the evening.
“Such incidents not only discourage us but also give us a sense of insecurity during performance of our duties,” said Amina Iftikhar, a working woman. Another working woman, Ayesha said the lack of lights around the newly constructed flyover of Chandani Chowk also makes the area deserted in late hours, luring criminals to snatch cell phones and cash from the people.
Hamid, a government employee, said that a group of bikers looted him at gun point depriving him of salary, a cell phone and a wrist watch infront of a bank ATM in Commercial Market. For avoiding physical harm from the looters, the residents prefer to hand over cash and cell phones without any argument. Our complains registered to police go in vain when the latter take no action against the street crimes, Hamid said.
