JCP okays Justice Atta elevation as SC judge

ISLAMABAD - The Judicial Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday approved Lahore High Court Chief Justice Umar Atta Bandial’s name for his elevation as judge of Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Justice Umar Atta Bandial would remain the judge of apex court till 2023 and would also become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for one year.
The JCP meeting, held in the chair of Chief Justice of Pakistan Tassaduq Hussain Jillani in Supreme Court building, also recommended the most senior judge of LHC Justice Khawaja Imtiaz as the chief justice of Lahore High Court.
Four senior judges of the apex court, federal law minister, representative of Pakistan Bar Council, Attorney General for Pakistan and Chief Justice Islamabad High Court also participated.
The sources told that the commission also gave approval for Athar Minhallah name for additional judge of Islamabad High Court from Khyber Pukhtoonkhawa quota. Athar Minhallah was the spokesman of ex-CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry during the lawyers’ movement.
However, Chief Justice IHC Muhammad Anwar Khan Kasi withdrew the names of Mian Abdul Rauf and Anees Jillani for Islamabad Seat and Sher Shah Kansi and Tahir Shah for the Balochistan Seat in IHC.
