ISLAMABAD - The deteriorated condition of Sabzi Mandi (fruit & vegetable market) and adjacent areas, on the one hand loudly speaks about the poor management of Capital Development Authority and on the other, has become a source of constant headache for the merchants of market. The city managers have installed drinking water purification plant in the area nearly three years ago to facilitate the dwellers and merchants of the locality but till today it lacks taps. "Even after the passage of more than three years we are compelled to take contaminated water as the water purification unit is still non-functional", said Rahim Khan, a resident of adjacent locality. It is pertinent to mention that in the area, mostly poor people reside, with no resources to use alternative choices for hygienic care thus their families, as they claimed during survey, were suffering with various contagious diseases like hepatitis. The water purification unit sans taps mocks the city managers for their careless attitude as well as compels people to depend upon viral enriched water. "If the CDA cannot make the plant operative after the passage of three years then it was better not to waste plenty of rupees over the construction of useless structure", said a merchant of market. He said that residents of neighboring localities were compelled to drink unhygienic water, thus were catching various diseases that could be prevented in the presence of clean drinking water. The boundary wall of Sabzi Mandi has also collapsed at different places that according to office-bearers of 'Anjuman Wholesale Fruit Commission Agents' could cause threat to security in the area. "In the absence of proper security arrangements from ICT administration at Sabzi Mandi and depleted condition of boundary wall, any terrorist can hide in the premises at night", said Anjuman's chairman, Agha Siraj. He demanded the enhancement of security arrangements at Sabzi Mandi and said, " At least police guards should be deployed at main gates". Babu Aleem, President of the association, harshly criticised the mismanagement of the CDA and complained that despite frequent pleas by the merchants of the market, the civic body had not solved the problem of parking in the area. "Parking is another serious problem of the market as the transportation of big vehicles is the routine matter but the CDA has not done any arrangements regarding it", he noted. The sorry tale of CDA does not end at water purification plants and non-provision of parking lot but reaches at the bad condition of sewerage in and outside the market. Anjuman's Secretary Tahir Ayub told the scribe that improper sewerage system was causing a lot of discomfort for the merchants and visitors alike. "The CDA officials seek bribe whenever they are asked to repair old lines", he alleged. He said that sewerage lines, from Plot No 80 to Plot No 84 and from Plot No 100 to Plot No 110 were in deteriorated condition and needed to be replaced on emergency basis.
