KARACHI - Two people were killed in separate acts of violence while three others sustained severe injuries when some unidentified assailants attacked a religious seminary with explosives here on Sunday.
According to details, three people were wounded when unidentified persons threw a cracker bomb at a religious seminary in Haroonabad area. The injured were moved to Civil Hospital, Karachi for medical treatment. Extra contingent of law enforcers reached the site and cordoned off the area.
DSP Sohrab Mayo said that investigation into the attack is underway and it would be too early to say anything regarding the involvement of any militant group.
Separately, a police sub inspector, Shafiq, was wounded when armed men attacked him in Frontier Colony area, Orangi Town. The incident took place when Shafiq was standing near to his residence.
SP Malik Muhammad Ehsan told TheNation that the police inspector also fired back, injuring the assailants. He said that the injured police officer was shifted to Agha Khan Hospital for medical treatment while further investigation was underway.
In another incident, a woman was killed while a man was wounded during an armed clashed between two rival groups in Lyari. The incident took place in Musa Lane area of Baghdadi where armed gangsters were busy in indiscriminate firing at each other. Two passers-by including a woman who sustained injuries were rushed to Civil Hospital, Karachi, where the woman succumbed to injuries. The deceased and injured were identified as 25-year-old, Zulaikha and Sohail.
Separately, a man was gunned down in Sector-4, Orangi Town within the jurisdiction of Mominabad Police Station. Police said that the victim was identified as 26-year-old, Mohammad Tanvir, resident of Baldia Town. Police said that Tanvir was attacked by unknown armed assailants. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy and later handed over to his heirs.
SHO Ahmed Butt said that Tanvir was a factory worker, adding that the motive behind the incident has yet to be ascertained while further investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, Rangers and police claimed to have arrested around two dozen suspects including members of various banned outfits during targeted operations in Baldia Town area.
A search operation was conducted at Gulshan-e-Ghazi locality in Baldia Town. Extra contingent of Rangers participated in the operation which carried out on a tip-off about the militants’ presence in the area. Entire locality was cordoned off and aerial monitoring was also carried out during the operation.
In the door-to-door search operation, about 24 suspects including members of various banned militant outfits and gangsters were held. The law enforces also recovered from the suspects. The suspects were moved to undisclosed location for further questioning and their identities were also not unfolded.
Meanwhile, a low-intensity explosion took place near Askari Park in Old Sabzi Mandi area within the limits of PIB Colony Police Station. Reacting on information, police officials reached the site and collected the evidence. DSP Nasir Lodhi said that no one was hurt in the explosion. Quoting the initial investigation, police officials said that unidentified persons threw a cracker bomb at Bismillah Subhan Hotel from a high-roof van. However, the bomb fell on the road and went off. Police said that apparently the hotel was the target while further investigation was underway. No case was registered.
PSF PROTESTS KILLING OF ITS LEADER:
Scores of activists of the Pakhtun Student Federation blocked the main Super Highway for hours, protesting against the killing of their leader Shah Kalam Mehsud in an alleged encounter with police. Following the protest, police high ups succumbed to the public pressure and suspended the Sohrab Goth SHO, initiating inquiry into the incident.
Mehsud was killed in an alleged police encounter in Ganna Mandi area near Super Highway on the night between Friday and Saturday.
Mehsud was laid to rest in a Sohrab Goth graveyard on Sunday. After his burial, scores of the funeral participants including Mehsud’s family members gathered on the main Super Highway, blocking it for hours. They shouted slogans against the police officials involved in what they said the killing of Mehsud.
According to PSF leader Tariq Tareen said, “We ended our protest as the police high ups convinced us by saying that Mehsud was not a dacoit but a martyr.”
The protesters called off their protest after police high ups suspended Sohrab Goth SHO Shoaib Shaikh and initiated inquiry against him and Sacchal SHO Shaukat Raza.
