KARACHI Striker Safiullah struck in extra time to save blushes for top rated KRL and earn a 2-1 win over lowly Pakistan Steel for a semi-final berth in the KPT sponsored PFF Football Cup here Tuesday at the KPT Benazir Bhutto football Stadium. The decisive goal of the match came in 13th minute of extra time after the team had tied one all in full time. Pakistan Steel which came into the championship as a substitute team after Gilgit and Baltistan withdrew broke the ice in 75th minute with Tariq Junior hiting the target. KRL lived through the agony as defeat stared it in their face but the equaliser came in the injury time just before the final hooter. Shahid Ahmed found the goal that restored parity. Experience of the KRL team prevailed in extra time when they found the match winners. In the second quarter-final of the day, NBP posted imposing 3-0 win over Navy. Young winger Adam Hameed struck two goals in the 19th and 68th minute and skipper Abdul Aziz added third in the 82nd minute for the bankers. The game between KRL and Pakistan Steel was evenly balanced after 90-minutes. It was a match between national champions and the stand-bye B-Division team who entered the event as 16th team after withdrawal of Gilgit Baltistan. KRL were the first to settle down but missed a chance in the ninth minute when current leading scorer Safi Ullah failed to connect the ball properly after Zubair Ahmed and Shahid Nabi had moved in concert. Three minutes later lanky winger Muhammad Qasim fumbled with a certain chance. First opportunity for Pakistan Steel emerged in the 38th minute when Karim raced onto Muhammad Maqbool pass but KRL keeper Ghulam Nabi was alert under the bar. KRL forced another opportunity in the 40th minute but midfielder Rana Fakhar Hayat wasted skipper Samar Ishaqs free-kick. It was 0-0 at interval. The second half was restricted to defensive tactics and both the teams were in tight marking pattern. Safi Ullah, however, forced 72nd minute chance but Steel keeper Najeeb Ul Hassan foiled his close-range attempt. The game took sensational turn when underdogs Steel took the lead in the 75th minute with midfielder Muhammad Bakash curling the ball from right wing. KRL keeper Ghulan Nabi failed to judge the flight and striker Tariq Junior, lobbed the ball in. KRL went all out for equalizer. The double substitution and 6-minute injury time helped KRL to level the issue in the 91st minute. Substitute Yasir Afridi crossed the ball .In the ensuing confusion and panic Pakistan Steel defence and Samar pushed the ball forward to Shahid Ahmed to steer the ball past Najeeb from hand-shake distance. It was 1-1 after 90 minutes. KRL snatched all-important winner through Safi Ullah whose low drive proved too tricky for Najeeb in the 13th minute of extra-time. Fixture for Wednesday.Quarter-finals.
