Power cuts bite as mercury soars

KARACHI - The metropolitan has now started to face acute shortfall of power supply, as loadshedding in the City has hiked up in harmony with the rising mercury level day by day. Moreover, different examination centres for Intermediate board exams witness power outages. Karachi is witnessing long spells of power outages these days, with so much heat and humidity, which is mounting distress among the citizens. Seven to eight hours of loadshedding are now become routine for the Karachiittes, in addition to this, power supply faults are also occurring, which has enhanced the loadshedding period. The experts have predicted that loadshedding in peak summer season will be of 16 to 18 hours daily on rotational bases. Due to these consistent power outages, students preparing for their Intermediate exams are suffering very badly. It is really a test of our patience. We have to prepare for our papers but the loadshedding has made it almost impossible for us to concentrate on studies. Last year, the condition was same as now and that had affected our results, now this year again, we are in the same situation so the same results are also expected. Perhaps, after few years the condition will change and we would be blessed with continues supply of electricity, said a student appearing in the board exams. On the other hand, power distribution in the City is in deteriorated condition these days, as reports of various power supply faults in the system had occurred in diverse localities of the City. Onwards from Thursday till Saturday, areas of Garden, Gurumandir, Agha Khan Hospital, Model Colony and areas of Gulshan-e-Iqbal had suffered prolonged power outages due to faults in the electricity distribution system. In almost all the aforementioned areas, people have spent their nights in complete agony, as unabated loadshedding continues. We are doing our level best to avoid these prolong power outages but the system of power distribution in the City is outdated, said an official. Adding that these faults occur due to over loading of the system or sometimes it is because of cable faults. The employees of the company are working day and night to remove the misery of its valued customer. We cannot improve the system in few months, time is needed to do so, we understand the edginess in our consumers but we still need their support and time, he added. Residents from these areas pointed out that the law and order situation is not good in the City, we do not want to create more panic by protesting against the situation, but it is painful to remain without power supply during these long hot summer days. The demand for electricity, in the metropolitan, has mounted to 2,300MWs, the demand and supply gap is 300 to 350MWs. The supply remains 1,900MWs, out of which 350 to 400MWs is being supplied by Wapda during peak hours, despite the agreed amount of 600MWs during peak hours. Kannup is supplying 80MWs, Bin Qasim power plant is adding 600MWs to the power system and IPPs are supplying 60 to 80MWs.
