KARACHI  - Four people, including two bandits, were killed, while 137 suspects were rounded up in parts of the sprawling Karachi metropolis on Saturday, official sources said.
Forty-year-old Ishaq Khan Ghauri, a Muttahida Qaumi Movement worker, was shot dead in a targeted attack in Orangi Town. SHO Saleemuddin Shaikh said the victim was a former member of MQM’s Orangi Town sector and used to run a printing press. The body was handed over to the heirs after autopsy.
An alleged bandit was killed in a road mishap. SHO Aurangzeb Khattak said Khalid Abdullah, a resident of Sohrab Goth locality, was trying to escape after looting a passerby when a speedy vehicle hit him.
Separately, two bandits were killed in a shootout near Al-Asif Square. The bandits were trying to escape after looting a passerby when a patrolling police party tried to intercept them. They both received gunshot wounds when their attack was repulsed by the police team. A motorbike and two TT pistols along with looted valuables were seized from them. The injured bandits were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors declared them as brought dead. A constable Fida Hussain who had also sustained bullet wounds was stated to be out of danger.
Meanwhile, a pitched gunbattle resumed in parts of Lyari where rival groups of gangsters resorted to firing and propelled mini-rockets, wounding two passers-by who were later admitted to Civil Hospital Karachi. Police said the gunfight continued. They said law enforcers had been moved into the area in search of the gangsters that destroyed peace.
Separately, twenty-year-old Sarfraz Salamat and Faisal Wahab, 45, were injured in a firing incident near Murtaza Chowrangi. They wounded were rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where they were stated to be in stable condition.
Unidentified robbers wounded Jamal, 45, for putting up resistance during a dacoity bid within the remits of the Garden Police Station.
In a similar incident, Mazhar Farooq, 45, was wounded by armed men in New Karachi area. He was ferried to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, police and Rangers claimed to have rounded up 137 suspects from parts of Karachi.
According to details, five gangsters were apprehended from Lyari’s Baghdadi locality. Police said the arrested gangsters were involved in a number of cases involving targeted-killings and extortion. They belonged to Wasiullah Lakho group of Lyari gangsters, police added.
Around 20 suspects were arrested in a search operation in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area near Faryal Apartments. District East SSP Pir Mohammad Shah said the search operation was part of pre-Muharram security arrangements.
Eight alleged criminals were netted by Rangers along with weapons in raids on Baldia Town, Manzur Colony, Marvi Goth, Nusrat Bhutto Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Mujahid Colony, Singu Lane of Lyari area.
Karachi police claimed they caught 104 alleged criminals, including two killers and two kidnappers, in raids. Weapons and narcotics were also seized during the raid.
Meanwhile, a Rangers high-level meeting reviewed the cases of criminals, arrested during ongoing targeted operation, involved in heinous crimes. The meeting held at Headquarters Sacchal Rangers was presided over by the Rangers director general.
