Nazia Hassan remembered

KARACHI  - Renowned Pakistani singer Nazia Hassan was remembered on her birthday across the globe by friends, family and fans on Wednesday.
The young legend Pakistani singer was born on April 3, 1965. She was Pakistan’s most famous celebrity in the 70s and 80s.
Her award winning single “Aap Jaisa Koi”, which she sang for the Indian movie Qurbaani made her a legend and pop icon in Pakistan and South Asia.
Nazia came into limelight with the PTV’s programme ‘Sung Sung’. Her music led to a redefinition of pop music in the country and Pakistan’s contemporary music scene owes a huge debt to the talented singer.
Nazia and her brother Zohaib Hassan received not only their education at London but also studied singing and music there. Although singers like Alamgir and Muhammad Ali Shehki were already popular at that time, it was Nazia who really popularised pop music in Pakistan.
Nazia’s album ‘Disco Deewany’ became highly popular and it made a record sale. Nazia Hassan died on August 13, 2000 in London after a prolonged battle with lung cancer at the young age of 35. She will always be regarded as the undisputed pioneer of sub-continental pop music, selling a staggering 60 million records internationally in a career spanning over two decades.
Pakistan’s vibrant contemporary music scene owes itself to Nazia Hassan’s redefinition of pop. In 2003, Nazia’s parents created the Nazia Hassan Foundation to further their daughter’s efforts to make this world a better place for everyone, irrespective of religion, caste or creed.
The government of Pakistan has conferred upon Nazia Hassan the highest civilian award Pride of Performance.
The award was presented to Mrs Muniza Basir, mother of Nazia Hassan, by President Asif Ali Zardari in an official ceremony held at Islamabad on March 23, 2012.
