Stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh facing hardships

Karachi (PPI) - Only two out of total registered 30,000 non-governmental organisations in Bangladesh are carrying out welfare projects in 66 camps of stranded Pakistanis there. Addressing a news conference at the Karachi Press Club along with noted educationist Syed Azfar Rizvi here on Friday, Anwar Khan Akmal, President, OBAT Helpers, a US-based NGO working for displaced and homeless people said stranded Pakistanis living in 66 camps in Bangladesh are deprived of basic civic amenities like education, health, employment, clean drinking water, sewerage system and others. In July 2004, I traveled to Bangladesh from the US to review living standard of stranded Pakistanis there. When I reached a camp, children asked me not enter the camp. I was told that there is not existence a bathroom for women of the camp where they could take a bath. Whenever women take bath in the camp, children at both sides of the street stop men from entering there, he told media men. He said that he spent his $1800 for construction of bathrooms for females in the camp at that time and then started working to provide them basic civic amenities in collaboration with Pakistan-origin Americans and native US citizens. Elaborating their grievances, he said most of the stranded Pakistanis are deprived of basic education. In Bangladesh, they are deprived of social and political rights. From the first generation at the separation of East Pakistan, now their third generation is waiting for their future, which could not be possible without financial, social and political assistance, he added. He noted that his organisation has established coaching centres for them in Dhaka, Rangpur and Memon Singh. The organisation has also arranged business of 1390 persons at small level while 27 other projects were launched for their economic improvement. He maintained that their NGO is also working to establish industries, boarding schools, training institute and adult education centers there. He appealed to the government and civil society organisations to take effective measures for social, economic and political improvement of the stranded Pakistanis.
