Rain wrecks havoc in Karachi, Hyderabad; 2 killed and 36 injured

Two people were killed while thirty-six others sustained injuries in tropical storm and torrential rain, lashed out Karachi and Hyderabad. The communication system has also been damaged in several areas of Karachi while the supply of water and electricity has also been suspended. Several areas of Karachi have been submerged due to the storm and water entered into houses. The schedule of trains for internal Sindh has also been disturbed. Several signboards were fallen in many areas of Karachi. According to Met Office, Saddar received 84 millimeter rain, Shahrah-e-Faisal 78 mm, Masroor Base 95 mm, Thahta 11.95 mm, Landhi 66 mm while 67 mm rain was recorded in the area of Gulistan-e-Johar. According to the department, several cars were trapped in New Karachi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, Airport, Azizabad and Gulshan-e-Shaheen under stagnant water and people also confined to their houses in several areas. Meanwhile, nearly 30 people were injured in traffic accidents. Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ibad and Administrator Karachi, Fazl-ur-Rehman visited several areas till night and directed officers of concerned departments to work round the clock. The rains also continued in intervals in Thatta and Hyderabad and two people were killed as van turned turtle at Supper Highway while six others were injured. On the other hand, a Special Cell has also been formed in Interior Minister, on the directives of Interior Minister, Rehman Malik. The cell would monitor the situation round the clock. The Interior Minister also contacted with Chairman NDMA, Lt. Gen (retd) Nadeem Ahmed, IG FC and DG Coast and discussed matters related to storm Phet.
