Bandits loot gold, cash from bank lockers

KARACHI - At least four robbers looted millions of rupees and gold from a private bank in Soldier Bazaar area here late on Saturday.
According to police, the armed robbers entered into the basement of a bank near Soldier Bazaar at around 8:00 pm Saturday. They initially got hold of security guard namely Barkat Ali with ropes, and then cut locks of the bank with gas cutter.
Afterwards, they opened at least 52 lockers with the help of gas cutters and managed to flee with gold, millions of rupees, cash bounds and other booty. They continued their operation for about 10 hours.
SHO Sohail said that chief security officer of the bank Retired Major Jahanzeb informed them about the robbery around 9am on Sunday. He said that worth of the robbery has yet to be ascertained. Police apprehended bank guard Barkat and a case has been registered against him.
Police sources quoting initial investigation said that the dacoits looted Rs 2.1 million from 52 lockers of the bank.
Meanwhile, the enraged locker-holders and residents of the area gathered outside the bank and staged protest and threw stones at the bank’s building.
Meanwhile, two people were killed in separate acts of violence while a citizen gunned down two alleged bandits.
A man was shot dead in Bawani Chali area within the premises of SITE-A Section Police. The deceased was identified as 27-year-old Farhan Aslam who was on his way when two armed robbers intercept and shot him dead for offering resistance.
Separately, Sohrab Goth police found a body from underground water tank of a factory in Janjal Goth locality. Police said that the deceased was identified as 15-year-old Azizur Rehman who was a worker of the factory. Police has yet to be ascertained the motive behind the murder.
Separately, a citizen gunned down two alleged bandits who were allegedly trying to rob him in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area. While quoting an eye-witness, police said that the bandits tried to loot valuables from a family in a car, when the motorist retaliated and resorted fire on the bandits, killing the both bandits on the spot.
Police said the citizen who killed the bandits also managed to flee from the scene. Police recovered two pistols from the bandits.
