Manghopir Road, a safe haven for illegal hydrants

KARACHI - Around 15 to 20 illegal hydrants are operating openly in Orangi Town, stealing millions of gallons water through the main 66 inch diameter water line. Most of them have been established at main Manghopir Road in UC 13 with the connivance of KWSB high-ups, a survey conducted by The Nation revealed on Tuesday. A strong tanker mafia operated in the Orangi Town which dug up the place adjacent to the passing main 66 inch diameter KWSB main water supply line and established illegal hydrant at the main Manghopir Road. Surprisingly KWSB officials did not take any notice of this illegal theft of millions of gallons water on daily basis. The worst affected areas were include different parts of Orangi and Site towns where the pressure of water is less due to over two dozen illegal hydrants being operating on main Manghopir Road and no one taking notice. During the visit, it was witnessed that some of the area residents with the connivance of KWSB officials and area police by greasing their hands had dug up the roadsides in nights and install suction pumps to start so-called tanker services. Even some miscreants had installed separate lines connected with main trunk line measuring 66-inch diameter and set up hydrants in their homes to fill tankers. The water then sold to hundreds of industries scattered in different parts of these two towns and minting thousands of rupees daily. It was witnessed near the Manghopir Road Colony, where in Raees Mianwali Colony, a three-storey building have more than three dozen shops constructed on the main road. But from the rear side the owner of the building had set up four illegal hydrants and daily filling over 100 tankers to sell stolen water without any fear of law. Juman Darwan, the nazim of UC-13, Orangi Town told The Nation that it has became a nuisance for not only the residents of the area but for the road users as frequent movement of water tankers had damaged the entire Manghopir Road from Sarhad Petrol pump station to Garam Chashma. "We had brought this issue in front of City Council as well as also complained to MD Water Board but all gone in vain," he added. The UC nazim had also mentioned that previous city government which is also controlling KWSB is not paying any attention to resolve the civic issues which the residents of UC-13 and its adjacent areas are facing. "The UC-13 of Orangi Town known as Baloch Goth is one of the oldest part of the City and being ignored by the authorities. Only the former City Nazim Naimatullah Khan had allocated Rs16 million for this UC which had been utilised on different schemes of roads, electricity, sewerage and others." The union council which has the population of over 90,000 consist of different ethnical groups. The UC nazim had also complained that the present City government had also not issued a single penny for the betterment of the area.
