KARACHI - At least seven people lost their lives in violence-related incidents in different areas of the metropolis on Sunday. Three more bullet-riddled bodies were found from Lyari despite the higher officials have been directed to restore peace by deploying over 2,000 police and Rangers personnel in the most affected area of the city.
The recent killings of the citizens in the Old City area have once again exposed tall claims of the provincial governments regarding restoration of law and order in Karachi. Two bullet-riddled bodies were found from Agra Taj Colony, Lyari within the limits of Kalri Police Station. The victims were shot dead by unidentified persons after being kidnapped. A police team reached the site and shifted the bodies to Civil Hospital, Karachi for medico-legal formalities. The bodies were later shifted to Edhi Morgue, Sohrab Goth for identification. However, no identification has been so far. Similarly, Baghdadi police found another shot dead body from Ahmed Shah Bukhari Road. Police said that some unidentified culprits threw the body at the said place after killing the victim. The body was moved to morgue for identification after completing the medico-legal formalities in CHK.
An alleged robber was gunned down in Orangi Town within the limits of Pirabad Police Station. The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Mohammad Ali aka Kaki. Police officials said the deceased had criminal background and his one companion was also killed in an encounter with the police in Orangi Town a couple of days ago. They said that initial investigations suggested that his accomplices entered his home and escaped after shooting him over unexplained reasons. An employee of the Karachi Electricity Supply Company was shot dead inside his house by armed men in Pak Colony area. Police officials said the deceased identified as Syed Mateen Akhtar, 55, was shot and killed by armed men over offering resistance in a robbing bid. He was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. A case has been registered against unidentified persons while further investigation is underway. In another incident, a youth was shot near Do Minute Chowrangi, North Karachi within the premises of Bilal Colony Police Station. The victim was going somewhere when unidentified pillion riders shot him dead and manage to flee from the scene. The body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy and later moved to morgue for identification.
However, a worker of the MQM namely Farasat Mirza succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital. Police said that unidentified armed attacker had targeted Mirza in Gulbahar area about two months ago.
Rallies against pillion riding ban
Two separate rallies were staged in Karachi on Sunday to protest against continuing ban on pillion riding in the city.
A motorcycle rally, led by Pillion Riding Action Committee Pasban leaders Salman Nawab, Umaid Qazir and Muhammad Rasool Rasooli, began from Lyari and terminated at the Karachi Press Club. Another rally organised by the committee began from Korangi and ended at the KPC. Pasban Karachi chapter leader Shaikh Shakeel and other organisers spoke on the occasion and demanded the government to lift the ban on pillion riding, which is causing immense problems for the masses.
Sewerage system
dismays KWSB chief
Karachi Water & Sewerage Board Managing Director Misbahuddin Farid raided several sewerage installations in Khokrapar and surrounding areas and expressed his concern over the poor sewerage situation within the vicinity.
MNA Sajid Ahmed, MPA Nadeem Razi and Ashfaq Manghi were also present in the area during the raid and they also expressed their concerns over performance of the department concerned.
Farid during his inspection raid of the area visited many streets and spoke to area residents to find out sewerage problems. He was visiting the area upon receiving various complaints from area residents and complaints from elected representatives.
During his visit area residents informed the officials that the sewerage system in their area has collapsed since several months, causing sewerage water to flow on streets, in front of mosques, schools and hospitals.
He said the poor condition of sewerage system is not only creating health issues for the citizens and putting their lives at risk, but also damaging roads and streets in the area. He strictly directed the Chief Engineer and Superintendent Engineer concerned to ensure that the infrastructure is restored. He warned them of strict action against them if the condition in the area does not improve within a week.
During his visit the MD was informed about Jamil Akhtar’s dual designations upon which he directed that a competent S.E must be assigned in the area who would be responsible to improve the sewerage system and infrastructure in the area. He directed that the complaints must be resolved on immediate basis.
Labour demands new PR engines
PPI adds: Railway Workers Union Pakistan has asked the government to provide new locomotives to Pakistan Railways to improve its efficiency.
Addressing a meeting at the Karachi City Station here Sunday, central chairman of the union Manzoor Razi said at least 100 new locomotives are required to properly run the railways. He said some 150 engines are in process of repair. However, out of the 540 locomotive fleet of Pakistan railway on 94 are operative.
It was noted with concern that the railway has stopped good trains altogether, despite the fact that they are a time and cost saving logistic means and also a good source of income for the PR. It was demanded that contracts of trains and projects running in private sector should be cancelled so that the railway could again be made a profitable department.
