'Government unable to enforce environment-protection laws'

KARACHI - Secretary Sindh Environment Department on Thursday candidly admitted that the government has failed to enforce law in order to protect natural environment from the growing threats of pollution. Some local industries and other sectors are polluting environment of the City but whenever the officials concerned tried to take action against them, they had to face a tough resistance, he said. He added the federal and provincial governments should initiate a crash programme to protect the natural environment and to put an end to the culture of spreading pollution. Provincial Secretary Environment Department, Mir Hussain Ali, expressed these views while speaking at the 2nd day Beach Cleaning Campaign of the DHA, Karachi. Sindh Minister for Environment, Askari Taqvi, was the chief guest on the 2nd day programme but he did not turn up at the event. Therefore Secretary Environment Department chaired the function. The official urged the DHA school children to motivate their parents and relatives, especially the industrialists, to protect the environment and strictly avoid violating the parameters relating to the environmental protection. Director Education, Pakistan Defence Officers Housing Authority, Brig Iftikhar, welcomed the chief guest and participants of the second day programme. He highlighted the importance of a neat and clean environment and asked the school children to make all out efforts to achieve this end. Selected teachers and hundreds of children, belonging to 22 schools of DHA Karachi, were participating in the drive. The children enthralled the participants by singing different national songs. During the 3-day drive, 3 students from each DHA school, who participated in the beach cleaning and collected maximum waste, were given prizes on Thursday. Naib City Nazim Nasrin Jalil was the chief guest on concluding day of the campaign. She appreciated the efforts of DHA authorities for removing filth from the beach during the 3-day campaign. At present, the Clifton Beach is the most polluted one. Before the beach cleaning campaign, the visitors could see countless plastic bags, wooden pieces, dead fish, horse/camel dung etc. The 3-day campaign of DHA is expected to improve the environment condition at the beach and create awareness among hundreds of people. Additional Director Education DHA, Col. (r) Asghar Naqvi, Lt Col (r) Rafat Naqvi, principals of local schools and selected staff, including teachers, played a vital role in organising the beach cleaning drive in a marvellous way.
