KESC cuts 8,968 illegal connections

KARACHI - The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), during its recovery drive 'Name and Shame campaign, disconnected 8,968 non-paying consumers in a week. FIRs had been registered against 7 domestic and industrial illegal electricity users. Addressing a media briefing here on Saturday, Zahir H Rizvi, director distribution, and Ayesha Eirabie, director corporate communications, said that 4,562 consumers had made full or partial payment and their connection had been restored. FIRs had also been lodged on the charges of using electricity through illegal means and tampering with meters and cables against a number of individuals and companies including Ever Shine Industries and Swiss Tex Chemical in SITE area, M Imtiaz Floor Mills Qasba Colony, and Atif Sani Dying, garments and loom factory in Korangi. On the other hand, 25 mosques and seminaries had also faced power disconnection over non-payment. Those who had made full or partial payment had subsequently been reconnected include Hanfia Masjid, Jamia Masjid Faiz Noorani, Al-Madina Jamia Masjid, Madina Masjid, Bismillah Al Noor Masjid, Masjid-e-Farooqi, Noorani Masjid, Halima Sadia Jamia Masjid and Masjid-e-Aqsa, all in Landhi, and, Jamia Masjid Green Park City Quaidabad, they added. A total amount of Rs45 million had been recovered during the week; they said and added that the general public had demonstrated great trust on the KESC in respect of reporting the incidents of power theft. Media, they pointed out, had played remarkable role in making the citizens aware of their responsibilities. The utility could not succeed in its efforts of bringing down the gap between demand and supply of electricity without the active support of the population, they stated. Giving out the operational update, they said at 2:00pm on Saturday, the total demand of the City stood at 1,885 megawatts while the utility had been supplying 1,684MWs. Wapda had been providing 620MWs while the shortage of 201MWs was due to the continuing low gas supply, they added.
