KARACHI - After at least ten-hour detention, police finally admitted groom Fahad Aziz to a private hospital on Sunday.
Fahad Aziz was admitted to Darul Sehat Hospital after police released him on a personal bond. Fahad is associated with the MQM’s Korangi Sector. He is also a would-be contestant in the upcoming local bodies elections for MQM.
He was on his way back home along with his bride, family and relatives when the law enforcers intercepted the wedding convoy on Shah Faisal Bridge on Saturday night and took him and a driver away with them at undisclosed location.
Following the arrest, Fahad’s relatives accompanied by the MQM leaders had reached Karachi Press Club and protested against the arrest. His newly-wed wife also joined the protest. She had also warned to burn herself alive if her husband would not be released. She said that her husband is not a criminal and police tried to nominate him in fake cases. The family urged the authorities to take stern action against the policemen responsible for the incident.
After Fahad was admitted to hospital, scores of the MQM leaders, workers and sympathisers reached the hospital and shouted slogans against the law enforcement agencies and ongoing Karachi operation.
“Karachi police use to collect Rs220 million from Karachi on daily basis and trying to declare Mohajir community members as terrorists,” said MQM leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui while talking to the media after visiting Fahad Aziz in hospital. MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said that the MQM’s innocent workers are being arrested and during the custody, their sensitive organs are being targeted. Fahad Aziz said that he was tortured and also given electric shocks. He said police forced him to confess the crime but he refused.
Police officials said that Fahad Aziz was apprehended under Section 54 of the Crpc which empowers them to arrest a person on suspicion and detain for 24 hours. Police officials said that he was detained over suspicion of being involved in the four policemen’s murder beside other heinous crimes. Earlier, Additional IG Karachi Shahid Hayyat announced reward money the four policemen who arrested Fahad.
Sindh IGP Shahid Nadeem Baloch later suspended the cops and ordered to constitute an investigation team lead by the District East SSP.
