Senior MWM worker shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI - A senior worker of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) was shot dead in Saddar area of Karachi while a torture-marked body was found from Lyari riverbed on Thursday.
One Asif Ali aka Karbalai, 40, was shot dead near Empress Market.
Police said the victim was going to Imambargah Ali Raza at MA Jinnah Road to attend a religious gathering from his shop in Clifton. Two armed riders opened indiscriminate fire at his car. He sustained multiple bullet wounds and died on the spot. The body was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy and later handed over to the family for burial.
Tension prevailed in Soldier Bazaar area after the news about his killing spread. Unidentified persons suspended the routine and commercial activities in the area while incidents of aerial firing were also reported in the area.
Besides the MWM, the victim was also associated with the Imamia Students Organisation and Jafferia Alliance. Following his killing, different Shia organisations including MWM also staged a protest on Numaish Chowrangi, MA Jinnah Road against the killing. They also blocked the City’s main thoroughfare for hours to protest against the killing of party’s senior worker.
The blockage of the main thoroughfare also caused massive traffic jam at MA Jinnah Road and the routes leading to it. Score of protesters also shouted slogans against the government and the law enforcement agencies. They demanded arrest of the culprits.
Since morning, the police blocked the MA Jinnah Road from Numaish Chowrangi to Guru Mandir Chowrangi to avoid any untoward incident as the funeral prayers of the slain MWM worker was scheduled in the noon. Later, he was laid to rest at Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard.
SHO Ghazanfar Kazmi said the victim was might be killed over sectarian basis. He said a case had been registered and further investigation was underway.
Separately, Rizvia police have found a torture-marked body of a man from Lyari riverbed near Lasbela Bridge. Police shifted the body to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy and later shifted to morgue for identification.

SUSPECT’S SKETCH
Police on Thursday made the sketch of a suspect - involved in the brazen attack at Jinnah International Airport Karachi - public.
At least 38 people including 10 militants were killed while several others wounded during the attack at the airport.
Police sources said they had prepared a sketch of one of the suspects behind the attack. Earlier, the police have detained some employees of the telecommunication services from Nawabshah. They said the sketch was made with the help of already detained suspects and the sketch belongs to a person to whom the SIM cards were issued.
On the other hand, investigators have also moved a summary to the federal and provincial governments for putting a reward money of Rs15 million for the arrest of the suspect.
District Malir divisional investigations SSP Abbas Rizvi said the federal and provincial governments had yet to approve the summary. The name of the person, who will assist the police, will be kept confidential.
