PPP, ANP form alliance for LB polls

KARACHI - Pakistan People’s Party and Awami National Party on Sunday formed an alliance for local bodies elections, but urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision about polls schedule in this situation of uncertainty.
The two parties would be contesting polls jointly for Karachi constituencies, PPP’s Patel announced during a news conference. He said LG polls in this situation of uncertainty might give a great loss to the democratic process.
Patel and Syed Ghani met with advocate Altaf and other ANP leader at Mardan House.
Patel said the two parties had a strong association at the grassroots and that a strategy would be evolved to field joint candidates for Karachi constituencies in LG polls. He further said PPP was in contact with other political forces as it wanted to see a true mandate emerging in Karachi.
PPP’s Ghani appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan to extend the date of LG elections. He said all the political forces had passed a resolution in parliamentary forum for postponement of polls and that resolution should be respected.
ANP Sindh leader advocate Altaf said the two parties had decided to go for polls together. He also urged the Supreme Court to reconsider its order about polls schedule.
He said ANP supported PPP during its last government without creating hurdles. He said conduct of elections in a hasty manner would pop up many questions.  The ANP leader said his party had shared the final list of candidates with PPP that would strengthen coordination between the two parties at the district level.
