Toddler, three political activists among 9 killed in City violence

KARACHI – As many as nine people, including a toddler, a policeman and three political activists, were killed in the ongoing violence in the city on Wednesday. A policeman, namely Mushtaq Kareem, 45, was gunned down within the remit of the Malir City Police Station.According to police officials, the constable was passing through a street when he came across unidentified bandits, who robbed a house and were trying to flee. Having found him in their way, the bandits opened fire on the cop, killing him instantly. The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for autopsy. The officials said the victim, who served the Police Department for twenty years, was a resident of Malir city, and hailed from Gujrat, Punjab. His funeral prayer was offered at Malir Police Headquarters.Separately, two activist of the Awami National Party (ANP) were shot dead in Nazimabad area within the remit of the Nazimzbad Police Station. DSP Shahid Abbas said the victims, Fazal Kareem and Aslam alias Malang, were affiliated with the ANP. They were having food at a restaurant in Nazimabad No 2, when two unidentified armed men, riding a motorbike, opened fire on them and fled. They receive multiple bullets and died on the spot. The bodies were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities, and later handed over to the heirs. After the incident, tension simmered in Nazimabad and its surroundings, where all business activities came to a halt.  DSP Abbas said the motive behind the dual murder was yet to be ascertained, suspecting that it might be a targeted attack. No case was registered till the filling of this report.Separately, an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement along with his two-year-old child was shot dead in Orangi Town within the precincts of the Pakistan Bazaar Police Station. The victims were identified as Waseem, son of Abdul Raheem, and his 2 year-old son, Osama Waseem, residents of Orangi Town. Police officials said the victims were heading some where, when unidentified armed men targeted them near 1-H bus stop in Gulshan-e-Bihar area. The bodies were shifted to the ASH for autopsy, and later handed over to the heirs. According to the officials, Waseem was worker of MQM’s Unit-121. After the incident, unrest flared up in Orangi Town and its surroundings, forcing a closure of all business activities. The motive behind the dual murder could not be ascertained. No case was registered till the filling of this report. Separately, a man, namely Adul Raheem, 26, was mowed down at his house in Faqeer Colony of Orangi Town within the jurisdiction of the Mominabad Police Station. Police officials said the victim was sitting outside his house, when unidentified gunmen appeared on the scene and opened fire on him. The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) for postmortem. Police officials suspected that the victim might have been killed over personal enmity.Separately, a 40-year-old woman, namely Salma, wife of Ghulam Shabbir, was killed at her house near Cheel Chowk in Lyari area. A police official said that she was busy in washing cloths when a stray bullet hit her.The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the heirs.Separately, a young man was shot dead near Iqra University within the remit of the Baloch Colony Police Station. Identity of the victim could not be ascertained. The body was taken to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities and later moved to a morgue for identification.Separately, a young man, 30 year old Afsar Khan, a resident of Landhi, was gunned down at a main crossing in Korangi area. Police officials said the victim was on his way to home from his workplace, when unidentified armed men opened fire on him and fled. The body was shifted to the JPMC for medico-legal formalities and later handed over to the heirs.
