Journalists protest killing of colleague in Larkana

KARACHI - The journalist community on Friday held a demonstration against the killing of their colleague, Aurangzeb Tunio, in an assault that also left wounded his brother and a friend in a town of Larkana district on Thursday. A large number of journalists, under the aegis of the Karachi Union of Journalists-Dastoori, assembled outside the press club, giving vent to their anger over the killing of Tunio and the rising violence against media persons. The reporter along with his brother and a friend was sitting at his office in the town, Lalu Raenk, when a band of gunmen, unidentified so far, appeared on the scene and opened fire on him. Despite his repeated requests, senior police officials did not give him a security cover until the day of the deadly swoop.  The protesting journalists, headed by Amir Latif of the KUJ and former Karachi Press Club president Imtiaz Faran, condemned the killing of their colleague, charging law-enforcement agencies with inability, besides their indifference towards journalists, let alone the general populace. An alarming number of journalists got fatally wounded, some of them died in depressingly regular clashes between rival tribesmen over a span of just two years. Visas extended without completing legal procedures: The officials of Sindh Home Department, Foreigners Registration Branch and Passport Office Karachi, have extended the visas of Indian nationals and others without completing the legal procedures, it has been learnt.According to details, visa extension department has been shifted to Islamabad from Karachi, which resulted in foreigners suffering due to lengthy procedure.Sources said that the officials of the said departments were continuing to extend visa on fake documents to avail the lucrative money making schemes. Sources said they were issuing fake visas to India and some other countries. A team of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Anti-Human Trafficking Unit Assistant busted a gang involved in the scam. They arrested accused Aslam Baig, Habibur Rehman, and a travel agent Mehmood Ali who had been identified by a source as main culprits in the scam, after this FIA also arrested Naseem Siddiqui, Monitoring Cell Superintendent of Home Department, and his stenographer Noor Muhammad Shah, FIA conduct another raid and arrest two officials of Foreign Registration Department namely Sub-Inspector Khursheed and Ghulam Mustafa. The FIA official also seized several documents, including British, Malaysian, Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani passports with extended visas and fake credentials.Four BNU Students Receive Mausummery Scholarships: As part of its 5 year strategic partnership program, Mausummery representatives today met the 4 ‘Mausummery Scholarship’ recipients nominated by the Beaconhouse National University Committee.
