KARACHI - MQM coordination committee member Haider Abbas Rizvi said the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi was not transparent as some elements sabotaged the action.
Addressing a press conference at Khursheed Begum Secretariat, Azizabad here on Wednesday, he said MQM was the first one to demand targeted army operation in Karachi for restoration of peace but federal government formulated a plan empowering Rangers, including targeted action against the criminals and terrorists.
“Target operation in Karachi has lost its direction as it has been moved towards the MQM. LEAs are conducting raids in the areas that are supposed to be the strongholds of the party and arresting the MQM workers and supporters. In the recent raid, police raided MQM’s former MPA Nadeem Hashmi resident and arrested him,” he added.
Experiences of operation against MQM from 1992 to 1999 have failed and the dreams to eliminate MQM will remain a dream, he claimed. Such practices would not be good for Karachi, Sindh and the country.
Haider said after the arrest of MQM ex-MPA Nadim Hashmi, party approached the authorities and we were told that if there are crimes in any area, they would arrest the MQM unit Incharge of that area.
Terming it a conspiracy against the MQM, he said hundreds of innocent people, including the MQM activists, were arrested during the operation and charged in the cases of 13-D and narcotics but MQM remained silent. The LEA booked and registered a case against around 50-year-old ex-member of Sindh Assembly and an engineer by profession. Haider quoted the FIR as saying that Hashmi riding a motorbike sprayed bullets on a police mobile parked in the area where he had served for the last 30 years as a political worker. .
Condemning the behavior of the Law enforcer cordon off the entire localities dominated by MQM and making residents hostage, picked up the valuables and other stuff during the operation and also misbehaved even with the women of the voters and supporters of MQM. He also said that offices of MQM members of parliaments have also been raided and LEA took away the LCDs and other office stuff proving the intention of law enforcement agencies.
He said in 1992 an army operation was launched on a formula that it was against the 72 big fish of the province which were involved in various crimes but the route of the operation turned towards the MQM.
Haider further stated that the recent incident of arresting MQM former Sindh lawmaker and workers is to sabotage the situation in Karachi. He questioned that why no operation has been conducted in the areas where activities of the banned outfits, including ‘TTP’ and Lyari gang war have been reported occasionally.
Criticising the targeted operation in Karachi, he said ongoing operation will not yield results and it was seemed to be politicised. He added that none of the Sindh government official played its role in restoring peace to the city but provided shelter to the banned Peoples Aman Committee, which has been operational across the city. He pointed out that the absconder leaders of PAC escaped abroad, including Uzair Jan Baloch and his companion Ladla known as actual chief of Lyari gangsters Noor Muhammad aka Baba Ladla.
He said that the victimising the MQM put a question mark on the status of the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi, adding the police have been operational against the designed framework provided by Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. Haider appealed to CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry to personally review the security forces’ activities.
Meanwhile, MQM chief Altaf Hussain has said that operation against MQM has been launched like it was on June 19, 1992. He urged the MQM workers to prepare themselves mentally and physically to confront the state ‘oppression’ with fortitude.
He deplored that the PPP has always started pogrom whenever they came to power. Now they have initiated an organised persecution of ‘Muhajirs’ again.
He directed MQM coordination committee to raise voice against the state oppression on every forum without breaking laws.
