Need stressed for promotion of volunteerism


KARACHI  - Speakers at the awards distribution ceremony on International Volunteers Day, here on Wednesday at FPCCI, emphasized on creating strong platforms for volunteers by society and government to promote volunteerism in the country and on proper legislation about social services.Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza invited a charter of social services from the social organizations/NGOs so that the Government can initiate the legislation.The ceremony was jointly organized by Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), the organizing committee for the volunteers day and Arsh Media group to recognize the outstanding services of volunteers and civil society. Representatives of business community, social organizations and philanthropists were also present.The speakers underlined the need for promoting the spirit of volunteerism as it works as blood in the body. They said that the government, social organizations and well-off people must reach the poor and dully support them to minimize their sufferings.Shehla Raza, responding to other speakers, invited the recommendations/charter on social services from social organizations/NGOs for helping the government to make due legislation for protection and promotion of social activities.It is the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) which can do such a legislation, she added. “Political will and social will together can bring a positive change in the country,” she asserted.She shared her social services and said there was large number of volunteers in the country. As a nation, she said, we all must contribute in one way or another. Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan said that the government, social organisations/NGOs and well-people must reach the poor class and try to bring some improvement in their life. He pointed out that till date the volunteers are not defined in the country and that they must have legal support and an identity to encourage others to join.He underlined the need for mobilising the maximum people to contribute in social services through certain fora or in individual capacity.He advised that everybody must cast his vote for a good of the nation.President, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Haji Fazal Kadir Khan Shirani said the volunteers day helps promote the spirit of volunteerism. The training of volunteerism contributes in maintaining peace, discipline and helps in eliminating crimes and in bringing reforms in the society. He offered full support to volunteers and social organizations, on behalf of FPCCI. He also highlighted the role of FPCCI Standing Committee on Corporate Social Responsibilities (CUR) in social services especially during the natural calamities facing the country.Other speakers included Dr Tanveer Ahmed Sheikh, Abdul Rahim Mosvi and Syed Ibne Hassan from National Bank.
