Tension engulfs major City areas

KARACHI - Tension gripped the City following the protests held in different localities here on Tuesday against the arrest orders of the prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on rental power corruption case. According to details, Shara-e-Faisal near FTC building, MA Jinnah Road near Jama Clothe market, Drigh Road, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Maripur, Safoora Goth, Sacchal Goth, Pehlwan Goth, Quaidabad, Landhi, Malir, Natha Khan Goth and Taiser Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Airport, Saddar, Surjani, Khuda Ki Basti, Rizvia, Godhra, New Karachi, Sindhi Hotel, North Karachi, North Nazimabad were affected where major traffic jam was reported due to the protests and aerial firing. Protesters also blocked the Super Highway, National Highway and Northern Bypass. They burnt tyres on the roads and blocked the flow of traffic. They also shouted slogans in favour of the PPP and prime minister and rejected the apex’s orders.Law-enforcement agencies, including Rangers and police were put on high alert to avoid any untoward incident. They were asked to enhance patrolling within their respective areas but the situation remained tense and police were busy negotiating with the protesters to disperse them.Commercial activities were also suspended partially as most of the shopping hubs, small and big markets and petrol pumps were also shut down reportedly due to aerial firing by unidentified persons in various parts of the metropolis.Meanwhile, the PML-F has demanded that after the verdict of Supreme Court, national and provincial assemblies be dissolved and fair and free elections should be conducted. The PML-F secretary general said that after the verdict of Supreme Court against the PPP Raja Pervez Ashraf the incumbent PPP government had lost constitutional right to rule the country.In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the PML-F leader demanded that govt should immediately resign on moral grounds and constitute caretaker setup with the mutual consultation of all the parties. He further demanded that NA and provincial assemblies of four provinces be dissolved immediately and free and fair elections should be conducted within 90 days.
