KARACHI - Dr Farooq Sattar, deputy convener of the MQM’s Coordination Committee, on Monday called on the government to allocate at least five per cent of the GDP (gross domestic product) to the education budget.
Sattar, who is also the MQM’s parliamentary leader in the National Assembly, warned that the nation would reject the rulers in the next elections if they did not allocate 5 per cent of the GDP for the education budget.
Interacting with the media after paying a visit to the Nazeer Hussain University, the MQM leader asserted that his party sought to empower the youth. The MQM would, he added, enkindle every house with the light of awareness and knowledge.  Sattar claimed that raising consciousness about education among the youth was the foremost priority of the MQM. He also said that the antiquated system could not hold back his party’s flight.
The MQM leader exhorted the masses not to vote feudal lords and influential persons in the next general elections if they wanted to come out of the current financial crisis. He was of the view that only a middle class leadership could change the ages-old feudal and corrupt political system of the country.
Sattar, who was flanked by MQM’s Raza Haroon, Tariq Mir and Abdul Haseeb, said that extremist elements were hatching conspiracies to destabilise Karachi. He also said that the book fair organised at the Nazeer Hussain University was an initiative of the MQM for the country’s stability.
Meanwhile, a man gunned himself down over domestic dispute here on Monday.
According to the police, a man identified as Rao Omer Imran (22), residence of Mehmodabad in Manzor colony, ended his life over a family dispute. Later the body was rushed to Jinnah Hospital for legal formalities.
