Extortion calls dropped by 80pc, claims CCPO

Says Rangers, police to conduct joint operations


KARACHI - City Police Chief Shahid Hayat said the police and the rangers would carry out joint operation across the city against the criminals.
In a press conference held at Central Police Office Karachi, Sindh Inspector General Police Shahid Hayat said the operation will continue till the end of crime and criminals.
He said the SIM cards being used for extortion had been switched off during the operation. Police managed to arrest gangsters, operatives of outlawed extremist organisations and workers of the political parties.
He informed that Liaquatabad Police, during a raid, had arrested four members of outlawed Lashker-e-Jhangvi. The arrested persons, include Abu Qasim, Azghar Khan, Siddique Akbar and Anis. Police had also recovered the bomb-making material from their possession and the literature. The arrested members are trained and they were sending the youth to Waziristan for training purposes. He informed that Azghar Khan is a local leader in the group and was operational in the area of Liaquatabad. In another raid, Maripur Police had arrested two members of Lyari gangster group, including Tahir aka Kakra and Abdul Hammed aka Munna. Two TT pistols and a hand grenade were recovered from their possession.
Separately, Gulberg Police during snap-checking arrested three political workers and recovered three TT pistols. They confessed killing four people in various police jurisdictions, he added.
To a question, he said 115 calls of extortions had been reported during the last few days. Police had blocked the numbers from which the calls were made. No more calls were reported after the blockade of numbers. It seems that small gangs are operating in the city by utilising the name of big fishes. To another question, he said during the meeting with the DG Rangers Sindh it was decided to increase coordination between the police and the rangers. Joint operation will be launched to accomplish the task.
Online adds: Shahid Hayat claimed that phone calls for extortion have dropped by 80 per cent due to new strategy adopted by the police.
He said under the new strategy, SIMs and cell phones of extortionists were blocked, thereby rendering them unable to call again.
3 CLOSE AIDES OF LYARI GANG’S CHIEF HELD
Rangers claimed to have arrested three close aids of notorious Lyari gangster’s chief Noor Muhammad aka Baba Ladla and recovered huge cache of ammunition in a targeted operation on Monday.
According to rangers official, the raids were conducted on the main hideouts of Lyari gangs located at Lyari Maternity Road, Slaughter Yard Road, Dubai Chowk and hideouts of Jasim Golden, Baba Ladla and Ustaad Taju.
“During the raid, the law enforcers arrested three close aids of Baba Ladla who were involved in the murder of rival’s gang Chief Arshad Papu.”
Due to further investigation, the rangers however could not disclose their names and shifted them to undisclosed location for further investigation.
In the wee hours of Sunday, the rangers continued its targeted operation in different areas of Karachi, including New Karachi, Sindhi Hotel, Mehmoodabad, Baluch Hotel, Bhains Colony, Gulshan-e-Myamar, Hassan Mujtaba Town, 100 quarters, Korangi, Johar Mor, Surjani Town and Yousuf Goth and other areas, he said.
During the operation, 14 criminals, including a target killer and three extortionists affiliated with a political party were arrested. The rangers also recovered a huge cache of ammunition from their possession.
Separately, Sindh Police raided various localities, including Sohrab Goth, Orangi Town and Faqira Goth and apprehended 13 suspects and recovered four TT pistols, a Kalashnikov and drugs from their possession.
According to police spokesman, three suspects were arrested from Sohrab Goth and 10 from Orangi town. In the jurisdictions of Baghdadi police station, an encounter was occurred between the police and the criminals. The culprits managed to escape under the cover of firing.
