KARACHI - Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza on Thursday said that he would not allow the banned outfits to perform their activities under new names. He declined the request of Shia organisations to lift the ban on pillion riding during the holy month of Muharram and said that due to the security reason he would not remove this restriction. The minister added that display of arms during the holy month would also be strictly prohibited. He said the security guards at mosques and imambaraghs should perform their duties in the premises of these places. He was addressing the meeting of Shia ulema, trustees and religious organisations held in connection with the security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Harram at central police office. President Jaffaria Alliance Pakistan Senator Allama Abbas Kumaili, Shia Action Committee leader Mirza Yousaf Hussain, Tanzeem-e-Aza leader Salman Mujtaba, Shams-ul-Hassan Shamsi, Shabbar Raza, Nayyar Zaidi and representatives of various other organisations also attended the meeting. Participants of the meeting expressed their concern over the poor security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Harram and demanded of the Home Minister to take immediate steps to improve the situation. Referring to the statement of PM's Advisor on Interior, Rehman Malik, in which he said that government had been tipped that al-Qaeeda could use the banned outfits such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Sipah-e-Sahaba to lunch terror activities in Karachi. They said that despite these reports, Sindh government had not yet taken any action against the banned outfits in the province as some of those were resurfacing in various parts districts including Karachi. When contacted, Jaffaria Alliance and Tanzeem-e-Aza leader Salman Mujtaba said the representatives of the Shia community had demanded the government to increase security of religious scholars, majalis and processions. He added that Sindh government would set up control rooms to maintain law and order in the province. Mujtaba said that Sindh government had directed the KESC authorities to stop loadshedding from 7 pm to 2 am. IG Sindh Babar Khattak, CCPO Waseem Ahmed, DIGs and other senior police officials were also present in the meeting.
