KARACHI - Opposition parties on Thursday continued opposing the currently amended ordinance just ahead of the Local Bodies elections in Sindh.
PML-N leader and MPA, Irfan Ullah Marwat said the PPP’s provincial government promulgated the Sindh Local Government Amendments (SLGA) Ordinance in the dead of the night. It seems the PPP would soon bring an ordinance of its victory.
Marwat expressed these views while talking to the media men outside the Sindh High Court building here on Thursday.
He informed the PML-N has challenged the SLG amendment ordinance in the court. It prayed to the court to declare the ordinance null and void as it is issued without following the legal format.
He further said the SLG third amendment ordinance and the delimitation carried across the province before the upcoming local bodies polls were aimed at giving advantage to the PPP.
It was necessary to bring the ordinance in the assembly to avoid pre-poll rigging tactics, he added.
On the other side, MQM Labour Wing Division staged protest against the SLG ordinance outside the Karachi Press Club here on Thursday.
A large number of MQM workers and sympathizers of various departments of Local Government carrying placards, banners and party flags gathered outside the KPC and chanted slogans against the Sindh government. They were demanding an immediate withdrawal of the SLG ordinance.
Addressing the protesters, MQM leader Kazim Raza said his party rejects the amendments in the ordinance. The PPP government had been promulgating the ordinances to amend the LG law to gain advantage over its political opponents.
A 16-point resolution was also presented on the occasion. It also included the demands of taking back the decision of transferring the KDA master plan to the provincial government, restoration of SBCA in its former position of KBCA and pay the salaries of the LG employees on immediate basis.
It is worth mentioning here the opposition parties, including the MQM, PML-F, PML-N and Jamaat-e-Islami have rejected the SLG amendments ordinance. MQM had challenged the delimitation in the courts while the PML-F had also announced to move the courts after showing party reservations over the ordinance.
Earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief Hafiz Naimur Rehman had announced it would challenge the SLG amendment ordinance in the court as it negated democracy and humiliated the citizens. The ordinance is an attempt to seize the rights of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
