Durrani acquitted of corruption charges

KARACHI - Accountability Court on Saturday acquitted Provincial Local Bodies Minister Agha Siraj Durrani from corruption charges. Durrani was alleged of embezzlement in the amount allocated for purchase of furniture for Swedish Institute in year 2000. The accountability court judge Muhammad Riaz Rajput exonerated the provincial minister after found him innocent. In last hearing, the court had reserved the judgment of the case after hearing the prosecution and the defense counsel. The presiding judge of the court, in his remarks, said that no evidence was found against the accused minister. The prosecution examined eight witnesses in the case. National Accountability Bureau (Sindh) filed a reference (8/2000) against Agha Siraj Durrani and stated that in 1995 Agha Siraj Durrani, the then Sindh education minister, and Rasheed Ahmed Khan, the then director of the Pak-Swedish Technical Institute, had allegedly committed financial irregularities in awarding furniture contracts of the institute, which caused heavy loss to the national exchequer. It is worth mentioning here that after the Supreme Courts judgment to abolish National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), NAB moved the reference against him. The minister was charged on account of embezzlement of funds worth Rs5.5 million. Though the corruption case against him had been withdrawn after promulgation of NRO in 2007. Later, talking to newsmen outside the court premises, Durrani said that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Saif-ur-Rehman had implicated him in false cases.
