Murali, Mendis magic leaves Pakistan in a spin

KARACHI - Experienced Muttiah Muralitharan and the mystery bowler Ajantha Mendis cast their magical spell on Pakistani batsmen to steer Sri Lanka to big 129 runs victory in the second Bank Alfalah ODI series here under floodlights on Wednesday night at the National Stadium. Both the bowlers equally shared last six Pakistani wickets to bowl the home team out for 161 in 34.5 overs after their team sent into bat had totaled 290 for eight. The two spinners who had played winning role in Asia Cup played here last year took last six wickets with Muralitharan getting three for 19. His scalps included wickets of Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik who made a quick 54 in 52 balls hitting five fours and one six. Shahid Afridi was he second victim caught off the spinner for 14.Murali also removed Sohail Tanvir for one. Ajantha Mendis took three for 29. Sri Lankan TM Dilshan was declared man of the match. In the first ODI the honour had gone to Salman Butt for his 100. It was Muralitharan who made the crucial breakthrough when he removed Pakistani skipper who with opener Salman Butt had put on 108 runs for the fourth wicket stand in 121 balls and looked like reaching the winning target. Almost later Sanatha Jayasuriya struck to dismiss Salman Butt, the first match century maker for 62 run made in 87 balls. It was an innings of sheer concentration and responsibility. He hit six fours. Pakistan who could not keep up the run rate needed to reach the target but with the support of fourth wicket stand could have made .Dismissal of Shoaib Malik who had to take a runner after he had some kind of pain in the leg, Pakistani innings crumbled. The third ODI will be played January 24 at Gaddafi stadium. Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik took a strange decision when he invited his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahela Jayawardene to pad up and bat first after winning the toss. The decision gave the impression that the host preferred to chase the target as they did successfully in the first match. It also gave the impression that the team management thought that Lankan spinners Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis get little support from the pitch while bowling in the second innings under floodlights. TM Dilshan who played better as an opener than in while batting in the middle order along with left handed Sanatha Jayasuriya, gave their ream a good start by putting on 43 runs before Jayasuriya left hitting the wickets with his heels as he played a full length ball from Umar Gul. The experienced Sri Lankan left at a time when his team looked in complete control of the home bowling spearheaded by Shoaib Akhtar and Sohail Tanvir. The two well known Pakistani pace duo could not make any impression on the opening pair who scored at brisk pace. They were scoring at over six runs an over when Pakistani got the break through. Umar Gul who came as second change dismissed experienced left handed. Pakistan need not to wait for long for their second success when Umar Gul with a smart piece of fielding of his own bowling as ran Kumar Sangakkara run out. The Lankan one down after playing a defensive prod got off for a sharp single which was not there. Umar darted out and after picking the ball hit the stumps directly to catch the batsman about a yard from the crease. Lanka were two down for 66 in 11.5 overs. Sri Lanka once again was in dire straits but a third wicket partnership of 99 between TM Dilshan and Thilana Kandamby lifted to 165 for two. Shoaib Akhtar who had remained wicket less in first match got his first wicket when he had caught TM Dilshan caught for 76 made in 88 balls with the aid of eleven fours. Third Lankan wicket fell at 165 in 30th over TM Dilshan should have been out earlier but was given life by Younis Khan who grassed a catch of the batsman off Umar Gul when he was 30.He enjoyed the life adding 46 runs after the close miss. With three best batsmen gone the Lankan run rate dipped. Thilana Kandamby justified his inclusion in the playing eleven when he made 59 in 79 ball before getting out to Rao Iftikhar caught by skipper Shoaib Malik to make Lanka four down for 190. Chamara Kapurgedera brightened the scene for his team when he started clouting home bowlers and scored 44 in 39 balls soared the Lankan total. He fell to Umar Gul caught by Younis Khan in the deep to give third wicket. And when Umar removed Thilana Tushara caught at the wicket he got his fourth wicket to finish four for 58. Sri Lankan total reached a respectable and match winning 290 for eight wickets. Leaving a difficult target for the home team. Earlier, Pakistan for the second game retained the winning combination of the first ODI which they won by eight wickets while Sri Lanka which was outplayed by the home team in the ODI opener strengthened its batting by including Thilina Kandamby in place of Jahan Mubarak whose run out in the first contest triggers a terrible batting collapse and the visitors had to play a heavy price for that collapse.
