Two million youth in Karachi drug addicts

Karachi (PPI) - In Karachi some 2million youth and children are the risk of drug addiction, as prevalence of drug addiction in very high in this mega city, said a Karachi-based NGO working on the issues of street children and youth. Rana Asif Habib, President of Initiator Human Development Foundation, talking to PPI on Saturday, said the major portion of Pakistani population is consisted of youth and children and they are highly exposed to smoking and drugs. He feared some 100million people in Pakistan might be at the risk of smoking and other types of addiction. In Karachi over two million youth are addicted, and rest of the youth and children are at also at the high risk of drug addiction, as drug trafficking is prevailing in every part of the city, he said. He charged that police conduct 'cosmetic raids' on drug dens, while the role of other anti-narcotics agencies needs a wider scope. He said the Anti-Narcotics Force makes an excuse that they are not supposed to take action against small drug peddlers. He said taking action against small drugs sellers is vital, because they compile together to make a Mafia. "We need to evolve a new legislation as Drugs Ordinance 2002 has not proven so effective, besides not being implemented in letter and spirit," he said. Rana said one could easily find cigarettes being sold in the city areas near schools, colleges and universities, which is actually prohibited under the law. In Karachi the main addiction is of Hashish, because this drug is easily available at every nook and corner of the city. The main trafficking areas of hashish are Chanessar Goth, Dhobi Ghat and Massan near Keamair, he said. In Karachi more than 25000 children are living on streets and they are highly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, as they are also involved in sexual activities, he said, adding that 74 % of these street children are addicts. He said drug supply is available all around the city through those street children. The young children are used for the trafficking of the drugs because police release them immediately after arrest, he said. He added that they are juvenile and that is why they are not prosecuted or persecuted. He said that a small piece of hashish is sold in Karachi at Rs20 while its one rod costs Rs120. The second main addiction amongst Karachiites is of heroin, which is also easily available here, he said. There are two types of heroin sold in the city - brown heroin and white heroin, he said. He said that the brown heroin is cheaper and it is sold at Rs40 a small packet while its wholesale price is from Rs.12 to Rs20. It is consumed through inhalation. The profit margin in white heroin is less than brown heroin and that is why brown heroin is sold and consumed more. Forty young street children died last year in Karachi after consuming brown heroin, he said. These deceased children were mostly Bengalis and Burmese, belonging to the areas of Kharadar, Burns Road, Ranchore Lane and Cantt Station, he added. He said the street children start addiction from cigarette smoking and then jump to hashish. He added after hashish they start inhaling Samad bond and Glue. These children later switch to heroin and finally become injection addicts. It depends on the immunity of the children that how long he/she survives once they become drug injection users, he said. He said that the main hubs of glue and Samad bond are Jehangir Park and Cantt Station. Rana said that drug abuse is the major reason why the addict children can't reintegrate with their families as they become heavily dependent on drugs and don't turn up to their homes. The drug addicts are facilitated by those places where Langars (free food) are given, he said. The addicts get free food to eat and a selling point of their drugs at these places, he added. He said that the drugs are also common amongst elite class, as they use STC tablets, 81 drugs, Restrol, Zenics and other drugs to seek pleasure. The Restrol and William 5 drugs are also used to loot the people on Mazars, bus stops, railway stations and other such places where children give those drugs to people through different means and once the people get unconscious they are looted by the Mafia dealing with the drugs. He said that Keamari town medical stores are the hub for selling the above mentioned drugs and drug Mafia buy those medicines from these medical stores. He said common practice is to give those drugs through water to the people to loot them. He added that children with innocent faces are especially used for this purpose by the drug Mafia. The street children, who are not involved in drug trafficking, are sexually abused, he said. Different open sanitation Nullahs are used for abusing these children, he added. The sanitation area of Ranchore Lane is a common place where children are sexually harassed while other sanitation areas are also used for the same purpose. He said the well-to-do Karachiites buy drugs from Qayumabad, Azam Basti and Punjab Colony. He added that parks at areas like Boats Basin are mainly used to sell drug to people of plush areas. He said that 56 % of the Karachi's populations live in Katchi Abadis and drugs use is very common in those areas. The bus stands are the main place where majority of the poor people consume drugs, he said. He said that Karachi is also a hub of exporting drugs to different countries.
