Policeman killed in raid on Lyari

KARACHI - A cop was killed while two others were wounded when a team of Crime Investigation Department (CID) reached Lyari to conduct raids on the hideouts of gangsters here on Thursday.In the wee hours of Thursday, Baghdadi Police cordoned off Musa Lane area when operatives of Lyari gang targeted them.An exchange of fire took place between the gangsters and the police party. A notorious gangster namely Ayaz alias Lehri sustained bullet injuries who was shifted to Civil Hospital under police custody.Following the incident, a CID team rushed to provide backup when some unknown armed culprits attacked the CID mobiles by opening fire on them, destroying the police vehicle besides injuring three cops namely sub-inspector Anwaar Lodhi, head constable Muhammad Altaf and constable Aamir Baig.The injured were shifted to private hospital where Altaf succumbed to injures. Later, the police had arrested Ayaz from hospital with bullet injures.The deceased Altaf, who joined police force in 1984, was the resident of Preedy police quarters and a father of seven. He worked for CID, CIA, SIU and several police stations during his career. SP Chaudhry Aslam said the CID team had later conducted raids at Nawa Lane and Moosa Lane on information of Shahid Pikik and taken three persons with three Kalashnikovs, five hand grenades and several rounds into custody. Meanwhile, the case (120/12) was registered under sections 302, 353, 427, 24/34 on the complaint of injured Sub-Inspector Anwar against PAC leaders including Uzair Jan Baloch, Zahid Ladla, Zubair Baloch, Rashid Rekha, Wasi ullah Lakho, Umer Katchi, Jabbar Jingo, Faisal Pathan, Naeem Pathan and Fahad Pathan.
