KARACHI - Armed bandits on Friday stormed a local bank branch and looted Rs0.7 million in broad daylight in Shah Faisal area.
At least five armed bandits riding two motorbikes barged into the bank branch situated in the Cantt Bazaar area of Drigh Road where they entered at around 12 in the noon.
They resorted to aerial firing to held the staffers and customers hostage. Shah Faisal Colony SP Ali Asif said it was the first incident of its kind when bandits resorted to firing and snatched weapons from the two security guards. They later held the entire staff and customers hostage and easily looted around Rs700,000 from the cash counter. They also took away the weapons but left the CCTVs.
Police detained both the security guards over their possible involvement in the robbery because guards were not offered resistance. Police suspended the assistant sub-inspector, Ali Sher who was responsible for patrolling at all sensitive points, including all banks located within the jurisdiction.
A case has been registered against unidentified persons and further investigation was underway. Earlier on Wednesday, some bandits had robbed over Rs4 million from the branches of two private banks in Landhi and Ferozabad localities.
