Girls outclass boys in matric examination

KARACHI - Girls students have once again sustained their dominancy over the male students by securing first and third positions in the results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) annual examinations 2009 Part-II General Group (both regular and private), declared by the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) on Monday. In the results of regular candidates, private schools, belonging to Parsi community, have left behind all other private and government schools, as the students of such schools have secured all three top positions in the examinations. A student of Mama Parsi Girls Secondary School, MA Jinnah Road, Farah Dhunjishaw Ferozepurwalla, d/o Dhunjishaw Ferozepurwalla secured first position (90 per cent) in the examination with 765 marks out of 850, Farhan Hassan Siddiqui s/o Mushahid Hassan Siddiqui of BVS Parsi High School obtained second position (87.88 per cent) with 747 marks, while Amun Arif Siddiqui d/o Arif Ahmed Siddiqui of Mama Parsi Girls Secondary School, MA Jinnah Road got third position (87.65 per cent) with 745 marks. According to statistics of the said regular examinations, a total of 25,151 candidates, including 18,792 girls and 6,359 boys, were registered out of which 24,937 appeared in the examination. Around 213 students passed in A-one grade, 1,563 in A-grade, 4,049 in B-grade, 5,720 in C-grade, 3,585 in D-grade and 262 passed in E-grade. Total 15,392 students had declared successful with 61.72 pass percentage. Similarly, in the private examinations, a total of 30,787 applicants were registered for the examination out of which 30,417 appeared. A total of 224 students passed in A-one grade, 1,783 in A-grade, 4,906 in B-grade, 6,957 in C-grade, 4,447 in D-grade and 320 passed in E-grade. Total 18,876 students had declared successful with 62.23 pass percentage. Toppers given Rs60,000 Provincial Education Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq in a ceremony, held on Monday, at Karachi Press Club (KPC) in honour of the positions holders, had announced prices of Rs60,000 for the toppers of the examinations. He announced Rs30,000 for the first position holder, Rs20,000 for second and Rs10,000 for the third. Speaking at the occasion, he said that the performance of the matric examination board was considerably atrocious, while he had informed the Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan about the negligence of the BSEK Chairman Brig (R) Shafiullah Qureshi, who had dishonoured the students by not holding the ceremony at the board. On the demand of the governor, I have provided the list of serving officers to select one for the board chief. Qureshi was rewarding hundred per cent numbers in language-based subjects, which shows the level of corruption at the institution, he added. Removal of BSEK chairman demanded Office bearers of KPC including KPC President Imtiaz Faran and Secretary Khanzada demanded the Sindh governor and provincial education minister to remove BSEK chairman and said that the chairman had dishonoured the students. They said that former BSEK Controller of Examination, Javed Iftikhar, who was also present on the occasion, was punished due to his performance and honesty but the main culprits were still working freely at the board. Earlier, Javed Iftikhar, President Private Schools Management, Khalid Shah, and office bearers of KPC honoured the toppers with traditional Ajrak. Position holders, while talking to journalists at the ceremony, condemned the idea of implementing the composite examination system in the province. They said that the system of composite examinations was not feasible and appropriate in our educational system. They unanimously paid their gratitude to journalists on account of holding a ceremony in their honour. They said, There was a strong role of the parents in their success. The long unprecedented period of loadshedding on daily basis really disturbed them in preparing for the exams. The implementation of the objective-based examination system in the City is need of the hour, they added.
