Plans afoot to hold Pakistan, World XI T20 series in USA

KARACHI A Pakistani American has initiated plans to organise a T20 cricket series between World XI and Pakistan XI in near future in Florida (USA) where a new cricket stadium with substantial seating capacity was commissioned last year, disclosed reliable source connected with USA cricket organisers Thursday. The source revealed that recently a foreigner visited Lahore to discuss the idea with current and past Test cricketers who showed interest with the suggestion that if such a competition was to be held, it should have support from the PCB. The organiser would approach the PCB once he had finalised the budget after getting assurance from a number of Pakistani players to appear in the planned series. The dates and the venue would be finalised on the availability of Pakistani and foreign players. As the event would be a week long affair the interested organisers are hopeful that they could get firm commitment from the players to visit the USA to play the series. However, as getting visa for the players would be cumbersome and time consuming process under the obtaining contrition in the issuance of the US visa, the organisers were giving thought to invite only those players who already have multiple visa on their passports to overcome the problem. During the past three years, a number of individuals have personally invited past and present Test players to USA to play matches there. Some of the senior invited players, who were paid appearance money, had also helped the organisers to raise teams. According to the plans, the three-match series would be named Boom Boom T20 series. The World XI is likely to be headed by Australian Shane Warne and Pakistans T20 skipper all-rounder Shahid Afridi may be approached to lead Pakistan XI. The sources said that the entire proposal was in discussion stage but added things were moving in right direction. The visiting organisers from the USA have succeeded in getting the nod from a number of Pakistani players but they had to overcome two hurdles to finalise the idea. The first hurdle is getting permission from the PCB and the second is finalising the financial arrangements with the players invited to join the team. In the meantime, it has been learnt that the USA Cricket Association, which runs the game in the States, is facing stiff financial crunch. Its financial woes had not ended though the ICC intervened and held elections to put in place a rightful body headed by a New York based businessman of West Indian origin Mr Dainty who is currently financing the USACA. The financial crunch is so severe that the USACA had to cut down the duration of a three day national event held in Miami.
