Varsity refuses to raise staff salary

KARACHI - The NED University of Engineering and Technology has refused to give 15 to 20 per cent raise in salary, announced by the federal government, to its staff as the federal finance ministry repudiated to give additional funds to the varsity despite of the governments declaration to give raise in salaries, The Nation has learned. A well-placed source in the NED varsity said that the federal finance ministry, in an official letter, refused to give any additional fund to the varsity on account of its announcement of giving 15 to 20 per cent raise in the salaries of the government employees. He said that Director General Finance, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Mujtaba Kiyani, has also endorsed the letter of the said ministry. The federal government is of the view that the NED varsity is required to fulfil this target with its own resources, he said and added that the NED varsity is already suffering with acute financial crunch. On the other hand, the administration of the NED University, in an official circular, announced that due to financial constraints the enhanced salaries which have been announced by the government and adopted by the university will not be disbursed with immediate effect. The said circular added that the possible schedule of disbursement of enhanced salaries would start from September 1, 2009. The employees (BPS-1 to 5) will be salaried from Sep 1, 2009 with arrears, while the employees (BPS-6 to 22) will get the opportunity after will be available.
