Govt must focus on free trade deal with US, says Aziz

LAHORE - Former Finance Minister Senator Sartaj Aziz has said that after the completion of first round of Pak-US Strategic Dialogue and for the outcome of such dialogues we will have to wait. He was addressing a seminar on Pak-American Strategic Dialogues and its impact on Pakistan held at Hameed Nizami Hall on Wednesday. Former ambassadors Iqbal Ahmed Khan, Javed Hussain and Prof Dr Ahsan Akhtar Naz also addressed the seminar while chief of Istqilal Party Sayed Manzoor Gillani and Farooq Hameed Khan were also present on the occasion. He said in fact America is looking for safe way out of Afghanistan and in this regard America needed support of Pakistani because it does not want to be escape like 'Vietnam after defeat. Regarding dialogues, he said that the only progress in the dialogue between the both countries was on security matters while the other issues including economic as well as trade matters and discussion on Kashmir and water issues was taken up informally. He said America promised only 125 million dollars in order to resolve energy crisis and enhancing the electricity production in Pakistan, which was disappointing. However no good news about restoration of economic and trade matters between both the countries was being heard. He said the US promised aid for enhancing about 400 megawatts production of electricity while the electricity shortfall in Pakistan is about 5000MW. He said aid of about three billion dollars for the construction of Bhasha Dam might be a great achievement. He said America promised more but assistance in this regard is less. He said America had given free trade agreements besides other trade facilities to some of the blue-eyed countries of the world and Pakistan must also be included in the lists of such countries. He said there is no progress for the establishment of duty free zone beside the areas of FATA in dialogues. However, discussion on civil nuclear pact begins for which Pakistan has to wait for long time. He said the during the dialogues Pakistan informed America about its priorities and in this regard Gen Ishfaq Pervez Kiyani had told America that Pakistan is fighting against anti-Pakistan elements and what is going on in Afghanistan, we are not responsible for that. He said Americans are impressed and aware as well about our success in war against terrorism in Swat and other areas. That is why America is ready to provide Pakistan F-16 fighters, helicopters and drone technology as well, he added. He stressed the need to help the people of Afghanistan instead of interference in its internal affairs. He said India now seemed convinced for dialogues after strategic dialogues between Pakistan and America but it also seemed that there is no role of America in holding Indo-Pak dialogues though America favours it. Regarding American aid, he said Pakistan must use the American aid properly for becoming self-sufficient and for achieving target we have to control our useless expenditures. He further said in the past dictators had very good relations with America for prolonging their unlawful rules. But now we have to strengthen the democracy and parliament as well with ensuring rule of law in the country for the sake of progress. Former Ambassador Javed Hussain said Pakistan must have good relations with America for the sake of national security as well as defence, economic, political and other interests. He said America and Pakistan relations is 'master and client and Pakistan always remained dependent on America instead of adopting self-reliance policy, which was a blunder. Iqbal Ahmed Khan said no country have friends and foes on permanent basis but only on the basis of interests which can be permanent because every country watch its own interest while developing relationship with other countries and America also is watching its own interests in the world like other countries and being a super power, how American can develop relationship with Pakistan on equal basis? But presently America and Pakistan have common interests in this region like elimination of terrorism due to which economic matters of both countries affected causing more than 40 billions of dollars. Earlier, prof Ahsan Akhtar Naz criticised the American policies and pointed out American role in this region.
