LAHORE - University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz has said that, United States is saving annually $500 millions because of rational use of antibiotic resist medicine Erythromycin. It is a draw back of our society that people are used to take antibiotic medicine against fever, sore throat and diarrhoea without considering antibiotic sensitivity test and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). He was speaking at a certificate distribution ceremony among participants of a five-day training course on Isolation, screening and preliminary characterisation of antimicrobial metabolites from food microbes on varsity campus. He said all infections are potential threat to life and antibiotics are life-saving instruments. However, without diagnosis, the use of antibiotics can be harmful for both human and animals. The objective of the workshop was to adopt modern techniques and rational approach. The food borne diseases and pathogens are important to food industry and public health organisations. There are more than 250 diseases, which are known to be transmitted through contaminated food.
